TRANS-TASMAN 2010 REPORT

[Updated: 11 February 2010]

A few weeks ago four athletes from WHLAC travelled to New Zealand to tour Auckland and compete in the Trans Tasman Challenge. The Athletes were Nick Shiel, Hayden Smith, Jane Hill and myself, Tim Martin. We
competed in three carnivals, The Colgate Games, The Bay Cougars Twilight Carnival and the Trans Tasman Challenge. NSW won the Challenge Cup beating the Kiwis by 26 points.

When we toured Auckland we slept at a Maori Marae, a sacred Maori place. We also got to go to some Fun Parks. The first was Waiwera Hot Pools and slides. The slides were very fun. The second was Rainbows End.
Rainbows End is like Luna Park and it has lots of fun rides including my personal favourite, the Corkscrew Rollercoaster, which was loads of fun. I hope lots of younger athletes in the Under 11s and 12s boys and girls
will compete next year or the year after.

Tim Martin (U12 Boys)

A couple of weeks ago a group called the Trans Tasman Team travelled to Auckland to take on the Kiwis in the Trans Tasman Challenge Match. While we were over there we learnt about the Maori Culture such as their
dancing, the way they eat and dress. We also learnt about past and present things at the Museum and Rotorua Mud Pools and Trout Farm. We also had fun times like at Waiwera Hot Pools and Rainbow’s End. We
also got to be picked up by a Kiwi where I got to look across the city in the Sky Tower. We also had concerts including the Maoris doing cultural stuff, and all the boys and girls groups had to create a performance.
There were also three carnivals; the Colgate Games, where many touring athletes took away medals, a twilight carnival where many participants got P.B’s, and then the Challenge Day where we took the lot - medals, P.B’s and the Cup! I hope I have convinced you younger kids to come on this great experience.

Nick Shiel (U12 Boys)

CLUB CAPTAIN'S MESSAGE

[Added: 11 February 2010]

Well … this is what I like to call the ‘busy’ part of the season, where it seems that as soon as you finish one competition you’re onto the next one and before you know it, it’s the last running day! For those of you who
are fairly new to athletics the next events coming up are Regional Championships, State Multis, State Championships and our Annual End of Year Celebration.

As you know, our Zone competition was held last weekend at Roxborough Park and what an amazing and event-filled weekend this was! Congratulations to all our athletes who competed last weekend, you all did a fantastic job despite the rain and the humidity. Well done to the many athletes who qualified for Region and I congratulate each and every one of you, for not just participating, but for supporting our fellow athletes (I’m now slightly deaf from all the cheering)! I would also like to thank all the parent helpers and officials who kept the day running smoothly, as without them this day would not be possible.

It is important to remember what athletics is really about. It’s not about winning, it’s not about medals or making it through to the next level (although they are huge achievements), but it’s about trying your hardest -
reaching for those personal bests, perseverance, commitment and team spirit. It is important for every athlete to carry that with them right till the end of their sporting lives.

Congratulations everyone and I wish all the athletes competing at Regional the best of luck - your fellow club members are right behind you.

Best Wishes

Caitlin Lowe
Girls Club Captain.

2010 CROSS-COUNTRY SEASON

[Updated: 22 February 2010]

As the Little Athletics season draws to a close, don’t despair, as our Cross Country season is not too far away.

The season commences on Sunday 18 April and goes until Sunday 27 June. Runs are held at 10am in Crestwood Reserve, Baulkham Hills (opposite the
Primary School) and distances run are 1km, 2km, 3km and 4km.

Cost per athlete is $10 for the entire season.

The season concludes with the State Cross Country and Road Walks Carnival on Sunday 4th July. This year it will be held in Tuncurry, so start booking your accommodation now.

Cross Country running is a great way to keep fit over the athletics off season, as well as helping improve performances in winter sports. It’s also a great way to train for school cross country events and a large number of the participants make it to Zone or Regional level and beyond.

As well as Sunday runs, training is also available during the week on wednesdays from 24 March at 5pm, at Gooden.

Cross Country is a fun and relaxing event the whole family can enjoy. Parents can run with their children and even dogs (on a leash) can join in.
For more information contact our middle distance coach, Ray Marvin.
