As a athlete of Winston Hills Club you have the opportunity to compete against athletes from other clubs. Theses include:

  • Zone - North West Metropolitan Zone

  • Region 1 Carnival (on qualification from Zone)

  • State Championships (on qualification from Region)

  • State Relay Championships

  • State Multi-Event

  • Trans Tasman

  • State Cross-Country and Road Walks

Zone Championships

This is a local carnival which involves a number of Centres within our local district. Athletes in the age groups U7 through to U17 are eligible for this event. U7 athletes do not progress past the Zone Championships. The Zone carnival is collectively run by the clubs within the Zone. Athletes can compete in up to 4 different events plus the relay if selected, with age groups U7 to U12 restricted to 5 athletes from each centre. For U13 & above, there are no restrictions on how many athletes can enter an event from each centre, but athletes can not enter more than 6 events plus the relay if selected. See selection criteria below

The first 4 place getters in each final (except U7) will progress to Region Championships.

Our Zone Carnival will be run on the weekend of Friday 27th, Saturday 28th, and Sunday 29th, Jan 2012 at A.H.Whaling Reserve, Roxborough Park Rd, Baulkham Hills.

Entries have to be submitted to your Age Manager/Championship Officer by mid December.

Region Championships

Qualifiers from Zone are eligible to compete at Region. Athletes in the age groups U8 through to U17 are eligible for this event. U8 athletes do not progress past the Regional Championships.

The first 3 place getters in each final (except U8) automatically qualify for State Championships. Then the next 6 best qualifying times (track) /distances (field) across all 5 regions in NSW would also qualify. The maximum number of athletes that can qualify to State from region is 24. The number of athletes that a region can progress through to State is performed on a rotational basis, where 2011/2012 season our region only take 3.

Region Championships this season will be held on Saturday 18th February & Sunday 19th February, 2012 at Narrabeen Academy.

State Championships

Qualifiers from Region are eligible to compete at the State Championships. Athletes in the age groups U9 through to U17 are eligible for this event.

State Championships this season will be held on Friday 23rd – Sunday 25 March, 2012.

Progression to State Carnival

If a child is selected for the Zone carnival, the athlete and parent(s) must be prepared for the possibility of going on to the State carnival, should the athlete be successful at the Zone and subsequent Region carnivals. If it is not possible to guarantee both a parent and athlete will be able to participate, then please advise the Championships Officer immediately so that another child may be selected in their place.
We once again emphasise that all parents of competing athletes are expected to assist in the running of events our Centre has been allocated to conduct on behalf of the LAANSW.

NSW State Team

The Australian Little Athletics Championships (ALAC) is a one-day event held every year, hosted by each State or Territory on a rotational basis. All States and Territories, apart from the Northern Territory, are represented at the Championships.

The ALAC encompasses the Australian Teams Championships for Under 13 athletes and the Australian Multi Event Championships for Under 15 athletes.
Selection in the Little Athletics NSW State Team is considered a great honour and a major highlight of Little Athletics involvement.

The 2012 ASICS ALAC will be held on Saturday April 21 at the Domain Athletic Centre, Hobart, Tasmania. Further information can be found on the LANSW web site http://www.laansw.com.au/

State Relay Championships

The State Relay Championships is the largest event on the LANSW calendar in terms of number of competitors. As the name suggests the Championships are comprised entirely of relay events, both field & track. The performance of 4 individual athletes is combined to determine how many points they obtain as a team & where they place in the final results. A competitor who competes in a track relay CAN NOT compete in a field relay.

The Championships officer will determine each age groups best team options & discuss these with each age manager. It is quite possible that an athlete may not compete in their best or preferred event. Teams are selected based on the best possible outcome for each team.

State Relay will be held on the weekend of November 26 & 27, 2011 at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre (SOPAC). The Junior Day (U8 to U11) will be on the Saturday and the Senior Day (U12 to U17) will be on the Sunday.

There will be programs for sale on the day of the Championships at a cost of $3 each. The program will also be available on-line closer to the date. There will be a limited supply of souvenir polo shirts available at a cost of $25 each.

Selection Criteria

The selection criteria for LAANSW carnivals and other carnivals nominated by WHLAC is based on the performance of athletes in a particular event. Performance results are used by the Championships Officer, with the assistance of the Age Manager, to select carnival participants where the athletes are provided with the best opportunities to reach their full potential. State Relays is a Centre Team Event and selections are based purely on performance results. Selection for Zone Carnivals seeks the preferences of individual athletes for events they wish to participate in, before making final selections based on preferences and performances.

Carnival results

As they become available we will be adding a report and results summary to the Results page. You can also see the results from other zones and regions on the LAANSW website.

State Multi-Event Championships

The State Multi-Event Championships are held on the first full weekend in March each year at a Country venue. This season the Championships are being held at Turner Park, Aberdare (Cessnock) on Saturday & Sunday, March 3 & 4, 2012. First event on the Saturday is at 9.30am, with first marshal call at 9.15am. Athletes participate in ALL of the events on offer for their particular age group. Performances for all events are allocated points, based on the LANSW Multi-Event pointscore system. The points are then added together to determine final results. Further information will be available closer to the date

Trans Tasman

The Trans Tasman is for athletes in the U11 and U12 age groups, from both NSW and Auckland. Every second year, a team from NSW (boys and girls in both the U11 and U12 age groups), travel to Auckland for the Trans Tasman Tour. On alternate years, a team from Auckland travels to Sydney. Next season the Trans Tasman Challenge will take place in Auckland in January 2012.

The Trans Tasman Tour usually takes place over 10 days, during which children get the opportunity to meet with people of another country and learn about their customs, as well as take part in several athletic competitions, culminating in the Trans Tasman Challenge.

The Trans Tasman Trials for selection to the Trans Tasman Team, will be held on the 6th of November 2011 at the Myimbarr Community Park, Shellharbour. The closing date for entries is Wednesday the 26th October 2011.

Events offered for both Home and Away Tour Trials are 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put and Discus.

If you require more details about the Trans Tasman Tour please contact Heather Mitchell on 9522 9004.

State Cross Country & Road Walk Championships

The State Cross Country & Road Walks are usually held on the first Sunday in July each year. In the 2011/2012 season the Championships are being held on July 1, 2012 at Kembla Joggers Cross Country Park, Darkes Road, West Dapto (hosted by Wollongong City Little Athletics Centre). The event is held alternately in a Sydney metropolitan or country area of NSW. There is a $10 entry fee for this Championship (this fee covers both the run and the walk). There is also a late entry fee of $25 (allowing an entry to be received for 1 week after the original closing date). Athletes in the U7 through to U17 age groups are eligible to enter the State Cross Country. Athletes in the U9 through to U17 age groups are eligible to enter the State Road Walks.

Entries can be made ONLINE or by using the MANUAL ENTRY FORM [AVAILABLE ONCE THE SEASON COMMENSES] (which needs to be printed out and forwarded to the Association office prior to close of entries). For further details and the list of events for each age group, the flyer will be available early in the new season.

Parental assistance

If an athlete is selected for a LAANSW carnival, a parent is required to participate in the running of that particular carnival. At least one parent from each athlete’s family is required to assist in the running of the specific event(s) our Centre has been allocated to run during the carnival. A roster of helpers will be prepared and operated for this purpose.

Selection may be withheld unless a guarantee of parental assistance is given. Parental assistance is a prerequisite for selection and participation at any of these carnivals.

Supervision

No athlete is to be sent to a carnival without the necessary equipment (ie. uniform, hat, sun screen, lunch, money etc). It is the responsibility of the parent to arrange transport to and from the carnival and supervision for their children at the carnival. It cannot be assumed the Age Manager or other club official will accept responsibility for your child.
For more information on any of these Championships / Carnivals, please contact the Championships Officer or see the Championships page on the LAANSW website.
